The University of Plymouth is a public university that was established in 1862 as a polytechnic institute. The institute gained the status of a university in 1992 and is also the first contemporary university to start a private medical and dental school. It is affiliated to ACU, EUA, CHUC, and Universities UK. The university has academic collaborations with several renowned institutes including GSM London, Highlands College, Weymouth College, Strode College, City of Bristol College, and Exeter College.
Notably, the main campus of the university dwells at the center of Plymouth. It includes academic buildings, libraries, laboratories, and student residence halls. The main campus is home to the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business, Faculty of Science and Engineering, and the Faculty of Health, as well as the University of Plymouth Students’ Union. The North Plymouth campus hosts the School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, and School of Biomedical and Healthcare Sciences. The Roland Levinsky Building, a 9-story structure, houses a public art gallery, digital media suites, and three performance rehearsal studios.
The Charles Seale-Hayne Library with 24×7 accessibility houses more than 350,000 books, e-books, journals, and additional resources for research, learning, and teaching. The primary mode of transport in the campus involves cars and two-wheelers. Also, the nearest railway station is just a few minutes’ walk from the campus.
The academic structure of the university is organized into faculties, each of which comprises a number of schools that offer undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral-level degree programs in various disciplines. The Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and business offer degrees in English, art history, architecture, fine art, photography, media arts, dance, theatre, and music. Plymouth Business School is part of the University of Plymouth’s Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and the School offers undergraduate and postgraduate (masters) degrees, is research active, and works in partnership with industry and organizations across the world. The Faculty of Health comprises the former University of Plymouth Faculty of Health and Human Sciences and Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and offers degree programs in social work, and medical sciences. The Science and Engineering Faculty offers degrees in mathematics, computing, environmental sciences, and also professional diving.
The University of Plymouth is a three-time winner of the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education, most recently in 2019 for marine microplastic pollution research. The university has over 19000 students and 2,500 staff members. The student population of the university comprises of 3,000 international students from 100 countries. In addition to that Over 4,500 students per year benefit from placements and work-based learning.
The university has many distinguished alumni who are leaders and have received awards in their fields. The alumni list of the university includes Sebastian Clover (the youngest sailor to cross the Atlantic Ocean), Monty Halls (A Wildlife Presenter at BBC), Jane Wilson-Howarth (Physician and a Travel-Writer), Mandy Chessell (Computer Scientist), Clare Nasir (Meteorologist), Darren Jones (MP for Bristol North West), and Jaka Aryadipa Singgih (Indonesian Politician and Entrepreneur).
