Established in 1876, the University of Oregon (UO) is a highly-ranked public flagship institution of higher education and research in the city of Eugene. UO was set up as the Oregon State University and had just one building in its initial years, now known as the Deady Hall. It started functioning with 155 students and five faculty members. The university has affiliations from the Universities Research Association (URA), Association of American Universities (AAU) and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU). UO is also affiliated with the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) and the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U).
The University of Oregon has a 295-acre campus consisting of 80 historic and contemporary buildings designed around several quadrangles. The Union Center (Erb Memorial Union) in the middle of the campus houses meeting spaces, group and faculty offices, several dining options, multi-purpose auditorium, a bike-share program, craft center and a pub. Located to its south is the Student Recreation Centre that features an elevated running track, a swimming pool, rock climbing walls and courts for basketball and racquetball. The eastern section of the UO campus comprises about 11 residence halls. The university has several libraries that hold comprehensive collections of resources for reference, educational technology, and media services.
The University of Oregon has five colleges and four schools that offer more than 325 degree and certificate programs at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate levels. The university extends educational programs in arts, science, business, design, and education. It also offers professional programs in law, journalism, mass communication, music, dance, architecture, environmental studies, and accounting. The institution has 2,041 faculty members for teaching and research, which includes one Nobel Prize Winner and three Pulitzer Prize Winners. At present, about 22,760 students are enrolled for various programs at the university, out of which 53.3% are females and 46.7% are males. With an average class size of 20 learners, the student-faculty ratio at UO is 16:1.
