The University of Aberdeen is a popular institution in Scotland that is based on public research. Founded in the year 1495, it is a university where teaching is organized across 12 schools. Of late, the University of Aberdeen is ranked amongst the world’s top 200 universities consistently. It has also been placed 31st across the world under the 2019 impact rankings of Times Higher Education University. Moreover, it received the title, ‘Scottish University of the Year 2019’ from The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide.

As it is presently constituted, the University of Aberdeen was established in 1860 by a union of King’s College and Marischal College, a 1593 second university recognized as a Protestant alternative to the former. It is home to two campuses; King’s College campus which dominates the Old Aberdeen section of the city. Another campus of the university is the Foresterhill campus which is home to the School of Medicine and Dentistry and the School of Medical Sciences. One amongst the largest health campuses in Europe is comprised of these two buildings. The department of social sciences, arts, and physical sciences along with the university’s main library can be located on the Old Aberdeen campus. The majority of subjects under medicine and life sciences are covered by the university’s Foresterhill campus. One international campus is also maintained by the university in Doha, Qatar.

The University of Aberdeen has 15,000 students (approximately) including international students studying undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate-level programs. The student body of the university represented 130 different countries with a ratio of 43:57 in terms of the enlistment of men and women, respectively. Overall, the university offers over 370 bachelor degree programs along with 150 plus masters’ degree programs. At the university, the students represent themselves through students’ association called the Aberdeen University Students’ Association (AUSA).

In addition, the University of Aberdeen boasts of a wide and notable alumni network. There are many notable figures who studied, taught, and worked in a variety of fields at the university. As alumni, 5 Nobel laureates are associated with the university. Alistair Carmichael, former Secretary of State for the country Scotland; the Exchequer’s former Chancellor Alistair Darling and the former Paymaster General named Tessa Jowell are some of the leading personalities produced by the university amongst several others.
