United States Merchant Marine Academy

The United States Merchant Marine Academy situated in Kings Point, New York is a United States Service Academy. The university was established in 1943. The university is headed by Dean John R. Ballard. The university is spread across a vast area of 82 acres. The academy is a national institution, operated by the Federal Government’s Maritime Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation. It is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

The university’s students are trained in Customs, Marine Engineering, International Law, Navigation, Personnel Management, Ship’s Administration and Maritime Law, and several subjects important to the charge of managing a large ship. The university is one of the 5 U.S. Service Academies. The academy provides Bachelor of Science 4-year degree programs like Marine Transportation, Maritime Logistics and Security, Marine Engineering, Marine Engineering Systems, and Marine Engineering and Shipyard Management. The academy also provides 5 majors like 2 Deck Majors namely Maritime Logistics and Security and Transportation. The 3 Engine Majors are Marine Engineering and Shipyard Management, Marine Engineering and Marine Engineering Systems. The Marine Engineering and Shipyard Management and Marine Engineering Systems graduates are qualified to appear for the engineer training examination (EIT) administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

The academy competes and participates in Division III of the NCAA and is a member of the Skyline Conference. The academy is also members of the Liberty League and Centennial Conference. The Merchant Marine Distinguished Service Medal is the highest award that can be granted to the members of the academy is the services corresponding to the Medal of Honour.

The Department of Career Services and Professional Development is located on the second deck of Furuseth Hall. It provides a range of Career Counseling services ranging from information regarding the Midshipman’s obligation, to resume assistance, to internship opportunities to graduate employment options.

A graduate from the academy on graduation will receive a Bachelor of Science degree, and unlimited USCG license as a Merchant Marine Officer, either third Assistant Engineer or 3rd Mate and a Commission as an ensign in the US Navy Reserves Strategic Sealift Officer program or as an ensign in the US Navy, U.S. Coast Guard or National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force, US Marine Corps or US Army. The graduates who choose Military Service must serve at least 5 years in the active-duty force of their respective service.
