Sul Ross State University is a public university in Alpine, Texas. Founded as Sul Ross Normal College in 1917, it has achieved the university status in 1969. It is named after former Texas governor and Civil War Confederate General Lawrence Sullivan Ross. The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. It has the memberships of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), Association of Texas Graduate Schools and Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. Besides the 93-acre main campus in Alpine, the university maintains campuses in Del Rio, Uvalde and Eagle Pass. The total campus size covers 647 acres.
The university offers bachelor’s, master’s, certificate and associate programmes in various disciplines. Sul Ross comprises four colleges including the College of Education and Professional Studies, College of Arts and Sciences, Middle Rio Grande College and the College of Agricultural Science and Natural Resource Management. The College of Education and Professional Studies has the departments of Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Education, Law, Physical Education, Sports Science & Kinesiology and Nursing. The College of Arts and Sciences boasts of the departments of Biology, Geology & Physical Sciences, Behavioural & Social Sciences, Computer Science & Mathematics, Fine Arts & Communication, and Languages & Literature. Middle Rio Grande College offers studies in the field of Business Administration, Education, Humanities and Natural & Behavioural Sciences. Further, the College of Agricultural Science and Natural Resource Management has the departments of Animal Science, Natural Resource Management and Industrial Technology. The university has a 90-100% acceptance rate for admissions.
