Found in 1957 as a college for the preparation of secondary school teachers of Maths and Science, Stony Brook University has become one of the country’s most significant centers of learning and scholarship. From the 1970s onwards, the university transcended from just being a university to being a research institution. During this time, there were effective graduate programs and scientific discoveries such as the development of magnetic resonance imaging. During the 1980s, the university expanded and improvised in areas such as undergraduate education, student and residential life, and intercollegiate athletics.
According to the U.S. News & World Report, Stony Brook University became one of the top 100 American research universities by 1998. In 2001, this university became a member of the Association of American Universities. This university is also a public sea-grant and space-grant Research University. This university is situated 60 miles away from Manhattan and is located close to the beaches of Atlanta. Stony Brook University is spread over an area of 1,039 acres on Long Island’s northern shore.
This university has a vast number of schools which are- College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Graduate School, Renaissance School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, School of Health Technology and Management, School of Journalism, School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, School of Nursing, School of Professional Development, School of Social Welfare. The university offers more than 200 undergraduate programs, over 100 master’s programs, and over 50 doctoral programs.
It has more than 60 majors and more than 80 minors. Some of the major undergraduate majors offered by this university are Biology, Psychology, Business Management, Health Science, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Economics, Biochemistry, Mathematics, and Mechanical Engineering.
Stony Brook University has 30 residence halls and 23 apartment-style buildings. About 98 percent of the tenured or tenure-tracked faculty holds doctoral or equivalent degrees in their respective specialized areas. Ever since the beginning, there have been 2,330 inventions within the premises of this university. It has acquired more than 700 patents. According to a report conducted between September and December of 2018, 94 percent of recent bachelor’s recipients are either employed or enrolled in graduate/professional school.
