Established in 1898, South Metropolitan TAFE is a technical and further education institution which was earlier known as the Challenger Institute of Technology. It was renamed to its current name in 2016. The institute is considered the oldest technical college in Western Australia. It began its first classes in the year of the establishment at the Fremantle boys school. The class comprised of 116 students. The institute is known to be a training college that offers more than 350 accredited courses for residential as well as online studies. It provides customized courses to both regional and urban communities. It has training facilities and programs in about eight countries, namely Qatar, Mauritius, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, India, China, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka.
The institute has a total of 12 campuses in Armadale, Bentley, Murdoch, Fremantle, Kwinana, Jandakot, Carlisle, Munster, Naval Base, Rockingham, Mandurah, and Thornlie. The campus of Fremantle is the main campus of the institute. Various short-term training, simulator-based training, and customized program training are held within this campus. The campus features several multi-functional laboratories, centres for practising & learning, workshops, digital classrooms, seminar halls, and a library that consists of a huge collection of magazines, journals, books, and research documents. The students can also access the online resources available at the library. The students experience a calm learning environment at the campus. They are provided with all the facilities required at the campus. The students can travel by public transport, which is easily available from the campus. In addition, many cafes and restaurants are set nearby the campus. A few general stores, stationery shops, and medical shops are close to the campus.
The institute offers training at various centres and institutes that are set at different campuses. Some of the research fields include Automotive, Maritime, Health, Fitness & Lifestyle, Applied Engineering, Building & Construction, Creative industries, Community Services, Business, Information Technology, Science & Environment, Hospitality & Tourism, and English language studies. The students are taught by experienced faculty members.
The students get an opportunity for internships at notable organisations under professionals. They also get a chance to visit the industries for better understanding. Several industry professionals visit the institute for practical workshops, guest lectures, and interactive sessions. Also, the institute provides scholarships for students who belong to a low financial background. The students have to score well in the entrance test and upcoming semester exams to get the scholarships.
