Savannah State University

In 1890, as a result of the second Morrill Land Grant Act, the Savannah State University was established under the name of Georgia State Industrial College for Coloured Youth. This act caused the southern and border states to provide a land grant for black students. It awarded its first baccalaureate degree in 1898, and in 1928, this university started its first four-year degree programs, thus ending the high school/standard schooling system. It was renamed as Georgia State College in 1932 before it was finally called the Savannah State University since 1996.

Savannah State University was the first to offer a program in Homeland Security and the second in the University System of Georgia to offer wireless internet to all students throughout the campus. The students are free to choose from a variety of 23 accredited undergraduate programs and five master’s degrees in total. The university’s coastal location gives it the benefit to improve largely upon its Marine Biological Department, thus giving it access to operate not one but two research vessels viz. R/V Sea Otter and the R/V Tiger. The research vessel R/V Sea Otter is owned by NOAA and is a 35ft twin diesel vessel, and the R/V Tiger is a 22ft outboard workboat.

The university also offers a course on Environmental Regulations, which is fulfilled by its teamwork with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It offers programs in Civil Engineering, accredited by Technology Accreditation Commission along with a program in Electronics Engineering Technology, accredited by NARTE as well as its programs in Mechanical Engineering Technology. American Chemical Society has also certified the University’s Chemical Department.

The Council on Social Work Education has certified all programs related to Social Work, and the Public Administration Master’s Programme is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration. The university is a public university which receives its funding from the state of Georgia and through school and tuition fee.

The university’s campus is widespread over 86 acres and a farmhouse that occupies about 51 more acres. Its Basketball team and athletic department offices are located in the Tiger Arena, which is a 6,000 seat multipurpose area, and all the football games take place in the Ted A. Wright Football Stadium, which has an occupancy of about 7,500. In 1971, the student body established a Wesleyan Gospel Choir, which completed and released its first album in 2004, naming it as RLW: “Revelation, Love, and Worship.” ‘Powerhouse of the South’ is the name of the university band which performs in the Savannah State Football Games every year.

The Savannah State Tigers is the team name that represents the university in all of the college and inter-college games. The university has its own printed and online newspaper, which is called the Tiger’s Roar and is produced by the student body itself. It also has its radio channel, namely the WHCJ Radio Channel, established in 1975 as “the voice of the Savannah State University”. It can be heard in Chatham County, along with Bryan, Effingham, Liberty, and Beaufort Counties.
