Minnesota State University was established as Mankato Normal School in 1868. Initially, the school started with 27 students. In 1921, it became Mankato State Teachers College. The institution was renamed as Mankato State College in 1957 and again to Mankato State University in 1975. It was given its existing name in 1998. Currently, the university holds the accreditation of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and many of its programs are approved by various relevant accrediting agencies.
Situated in Mankato, Minnesota, the university campus is sprawled across 303 acres and consists of numerous buildings. These buildings include several academic buildings, a huge library, research stations, a music library, a recreation center, two astronomy observatories, a student center, an athletics complex, and an administration center. The campus houses excellent residential facilities with spacious dorms that come with a capacity to accommodate over 2,900 people. It also features athletic fields stretched across 50 acres including Blakeslee Stadium for playing football. Edina campus, located in Edina, Minnesota, is one of the university’s satellite campuses. It offers a range of academic programs, from professional certifications to undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Minnesota State University’s six academic colleges offer over 130 undergraduate programs, including 13 pre-professional programs, and over 90 graduate programs, featuring master’s, doctoral and specialist programs. It houses over 14,000 students including over 1,300 international students from 97 countries across the globe. The university also has around 1,600 staff and faculty members including over 700 teaching faculty members. All the teachers are well-qualified out of which 90% hold terminal degrees. The university provides students with global learning opportunities through international collaborations with businesses, universities, and organizations like Allina Hospitals and Clinics, IBM, and Southern Research and Outreach Centre (SROC). David Backes is a popular ice hockey player and plays in National Hockey League as the Boston Bruins’ alternate captain. Adrian Battles is a professional football player. Lou Bellamy is a stage director, producer, actor, educator, and entrepreneur who founded Penumbra Theatre Company. Jerilyn Britz is a professional golfer and the winner of the 1979 U.S. Women’s Open. LaMark Brown is a professional football player who has played for teams like Buffalo Bills, Atlantic City Blackjacks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Minnesota Vikings, and Utah Blaze. Barbara Fister is an author, librarian, and blogger known for ‘Through the Cracks’. Becca Kufrin is a famous TV personality and the winner of The Bachelor’s 22nd season. The university has several other notable alumni.
