Established in 1922, Midwestern State University is an open university that is associated with the Council of Public Liberal Arts College, the Association of American Colleges & Universities, and the Federation of North Texas Area Universities.
Earlier, the university was named Wichita Falls Junior College, then it was renamed in 1937 as Hardin Junior College and later on, in 1950, its name was changed to Midwestern University. The university developed a graduate school in 1959. In 1961, the university collaborated with Texas Colleges and Universities System. In 1975, Texas Legislature changed the name to Midwestern State University.
The university campus is spread over an area of 255 acres. It features 70 buildings and 4 residence halls, namely McCullough-Trigg Hall, Legacy Hall, Killingsworth Hall, and Pierce Hall. Also, the campus comprises two apartments, namely Sunwatcher Village and the Sundance Courts. There are two dining halls and a cafeteria. Students are provided with all the facilities required. The campus offers a peaceful learning environment for the students. Around 100 student organizations are on campus. Two of them are the Organization for Computing Machinery and Rugby Sports Club.
The newspaper and production wing are set in the Mass Communication wing. The campus has a student-run newspaper, The Wichitan, and a student-run production studio and television channel, M&G Media. The campus is close to many cafes and restaurants. Departmental stores, chemist shops, and stationery shops are also located nearby the campus. Public transport is easily available from the campus.
The curriculum of the university comprises a broad range of academic programs in the field of liberal & fine arts, mathematics, business, science, and applied sciences. The university offers undergraduate degree programs, postgraduate degree programs, and online courses. The academic structure of the university consists of six colleges, namely McCoy College of Mathematics, Science, & Engineering, Dillard College of Business Administration, Lamar College of Fine Arts, the College of Health Sciences & Human Services, Prothro College of Humanities & Social Sciences and Gordon T. & Ellen West College of Education, and Dr. Billie Doris McAda Graduate School.
The faculty members are well-experienced and aim to provide students with ample knowledge. The students also get a chance to work under the professionals during their industrial visits. Besides, the university offers special programs such as Study Abroad, Centre for Continuing Education, Intensive English language course, and Student Support Services. The library of the university features a collection of thousands of books, journals and research documents. All the resources are made available to the students. Also, students can issue a book online. It is called the Moffet Library.
The university has a list of some remarkable alumni that includes Phil McGraw (Television host), Joanne Worley (Comedian), Albert Buckman Wharton III (Owner of Waggoner Ranch), Lanham Lyne (Mayor of Wichita Falls), Walter Wilson Jenkins (American politician), John Edwards William (American writer), Mark Rippetoe (Author), Larry McMurty (American novelist), Daniel Woolard (Professional soccer player) and Andy Tanner (Professional football player).
