Commonly called MTSU or MT, Middle Tennessee State University is an open university situated in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The university was founded as a normal school in 1911 and elevated to a teachers’ college of 4 years by 1925 and became Middle Tennessee State Teachers College. In 1965, the institute was granted the status of a university and became Middle Tennessee State University. Before 2017, the university was a member of the Tennessee Board of Regents. After that year, the governance was given to an institutional board of trustees.
The university provides over three hundred undergraduate and graduate degrees. The institution is divided into nine colleges to offer academic facilities. It comes with more than 35 departments to offer specializations in various areas. The university works with around 900 full-time staff members. There are more than 21 thousand students at the university with over 19,000 undergraduates and more than 2,000 graduates. It maintains a student-to-faculty ratio of 20:1. Apart from this, Middle Tennessee State University provides excellent housing options to the students. There are several areas at the campus that comes with communities specific to certain majors or areas of interest.
The university also has athletic teams, known as the Blue Raiders. The teams participate in Conference USA of the NCAA’s Division I in the Football Bowl Subdivision. As the university focuses more on Mass Communication, there are several mass media outlets at the campus. It maintains an editorially self-governing, student-run news source called ‘Sidelines’ that published daily content online and special print editions thrice per semester. Moreover, it also has an online-only publication called ‘Off Center’. Other than this, there are around 340 student interest groups, organizations and fraternities. Additionally, its Greek Life has various social sororities and fraternities. It also comes with an LGBTQ organization that provides access to resources and plans regular events for the LGBTQ community.
The university has successfully graduated thousands of students. Graduated students from the university have worked in areas like sciences, arts, politics and business. Alumni also include well-known entrepreneurs, Nobel Prize winners, people from entertainment, mass media and many more. James M. Buchanan has been awarded Nobel Prize for his great contribution in Economic Sciences. Other notable alumni include Kelly Holcomb (NFL quarterback), Tay Keith (Multi-Platinum Producer), Chris James (Grammy-nominated audio engineer) and Bayer Mack (Music executive).
