Medicine Hat College

Medicine Hat College (MHC) is a public college that serves the regions of southwestern Saskatchewan and southeastern Alberta in Canada. It is a board-governed, comprehensive, and public college. Medicine Hat College was established in 1965. The main campus is attended by about 2,500 students. Another campus situated in Brooks, 100 km west of Medicine Hat, is attended by around 200 students. International students mostly come to study at Medicine Hat College from countries India (26.3%), Philippines (9.5%), China (5.2%), Japan (5.2%), Somalia (3.1%), Sudan (2.9%), Ethiopia (2.9%), and United States (2.1%), among others.

There are two libraries that serve Medicine Hat College. One of them was built in 2003 and is situated in the B wing of the Medicine Hat Campus. It is known as the Vera Bracken Library. There is another library at the Brooks Campus. The libraries have about 17,000 e-books, 100,000 non-print and print resources, and over 20,000 online periodicals. Medicine Hat College is a member of the Southern Alberta Information Network, Library Association of Alberta, Alberta Library, and Canadian Library Association.

The Brooks campus is situated in southeastern Alberta which has a community of around 14,000 people. The students at Brooks campus enroll in courses like English as Second Language for New Canadians training, Adult Basic Education (ABE), and Practical Nurse Diploma Program. Other courses offered at the Brooks campus are College Preparation, Computerized Bookkeeping Certificate, Health Care Aide, Social Work, Hospital Unit Clerk, and Management Skills for Supervisors, Pre-employment Electrician, and Pre-Employment Welding. At Medicine Hat College, there are more than 40 certificate and diploma courses. Along with that, there are 25 university transfer, and many apprenticeship programs.

Students can also undertake a bachelor’s degree in education, nursing, and business. Collaboration with Mount Royal University and the University of Calgary has made it possible. Applied degrees in Visual Communications (Applied Arts) and Paramedic (Applied Health Science) are also offered. Medicine Hat College offers some unique diploma programs like Addictions Counseling too. Graduates of diploma programs like Criminal Justice can complete their degrees via Athabasca University.

The college is well-equipped to provide any kind of support that students could need. There are support groups offering help with personal counseling, indigenous support, academics, technology, wellness, and writing among others. EDC (Entrepreneur Development Centre) is a body of the college that helps interested students in launching their own businesses. Sports that you can be a part of at Medicine Hat College are golf, basketball, volleyball, and soccer. The athletic teams from MHC compete in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.
