Founded in 1946, King’s College intended to educate the sons of local coal miners and mill hands residing in the region of Northeastern Pennsylvania. It was established by the Congregation of Holy Cross priests and brothers under the University Of Notre Dame. Blessed Father Basil Moreau had formed the congregation of Holy Cross in 1837 as a means towards fulfilling the spiritual and educational void encompassing post-revolutionary France with the call to all priests and brothers of the Holy Cross. His vision was to enlighten the minds and hearts of people, primarily through schools and parishes in mission territories.
The chapel of King’s College, Christ the King, at the corner of Franklin and Jackson Streets, boasts of 4,200-pound anthracite, created in 1954 by renowned African-American sculptor and Wilkes-Barre resident, C. Edgar Patience. It is part of the approximately 50 acres campus located adjacent to the Susquehanna River in downtown Wilkes-Barre. King’s College is an independent co-educational institute with about 2,387 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs. The average number of people in each class has been observed to be 18, which encourages a healthy student to teacher ratio of 12:1. There are 152 full-time, and 77 part-time faculty members. Apart from 15% of the faculty, the rest all hold Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degrees.
The college offers bachelor’s degrees in 40 majors across subjects like Business, Education, Humanities, Sciences, Social Sciences, and allied health programs. It simultaneously has programs running in 11 concentrations and seven pre-professional programs. The college has newly introduced programs in Civil and Mechanical Engineering and Nursing. Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Health-care Administration, Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in Reading or Curriculum and Instruction, and a five-year Physician Assistant Studies program culminating in a Master’s degree also form part of the program offerings at King’s College.
The thrust of the degree programs at King’s College is in inculcating and encouraging students to develop practical experience and skills, thus, preparing them for rewarding and successful careers. It is perhaps the reason why 70% of all enrolled students graduate from King’s, and 99 percent of them either find employment or attend graduate school within six months of their graduation. It is, thus, no wonder that the academic programs at King’s College are recognized by leading accrediting agencies. This includes the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, giving King’s the distinction of being one of only 48 undergraduate schools of business in the country with this accreditation.
The National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, Commission of Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education, Accreditation Review Commission on Education for Physician Assistants, Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, and Middle States Commission on Higher Education is among others that have granted accreditation to King’s academics.
