Hunter College

Hunter College has been there for about 150 years. The college has many courses in several disciplines, including arts and sciences, education, health care, urban public health, nursing, and social work. There are more than 170 areas of study offered by the college and they have more than 23,000 students admitted to various programs. This is a public university that was established in 1870. There are 550 undergraduates along with 6,368 postgraduates in the university. The location of the college is Lenox Hill neighborhood of the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City.

They are administering Hunter College Elementary School and Hunter College High School. Originally in 1870, it was a college created for women but it also admitted male freshmen in the year 1946. The main campus is located on Park Avenue since 1873. In the year 1943, Eleanor Roosevelt devoted Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s and her hitherto townhouse to the college. That building had been opened again in the year 2010 as the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College.

The Princeton review’s 2011 edition of the “Best 373 colleges” includes this college as one of the best universities or colleges in the United States. Hunter was listed among the Best Northeastern Colleges and one of the five regional guides to be issued by the Princeton Review. It was ranked 284th on Forbes’s list of college rankings. The college has many notable alumni that include Barbara Adrian (artist), Robert Altman (photographer), Martin Shkreli (founder of Turing Pharmaceuticals), Ellen Barkin (actress), Jean Stapleton (actress), Paula Harper (art historian), and Roiger Manno (Maryland Politician) among others. Notable faculty members include Meena Alexander who is a poet, Godfrey Gumbs who is a physicist and many more.

The beginning of Hunter College can be traced back to the 19th-century movement for the normal school training that had gone across the United States. The college descended from the Female Normal and High School (later, it was renamed to the Normal College of the City of New York), which was founded in New York City in 1870. It was established by Irish Immigrant Thomas Hunter who was the president of the school.
