Founded in 1961, Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is a public institution for higher education and research in Florida. A member of the State University System of Florida, FAU is the earliest public university in the Miami metropolitan area. FAU is affiliated to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU). It has sports affiliation from NCAA Division I.
Florida Atlantic University has an 850-acre campus at seven locations across Palm Beach, St. Lucie, and Broward counties. FAU’s main campus is in Boca Raton. The campus has all the features of a modern university, including state-of-the-art labs and classrooms, suite-style housing for students plus athletic and recreational facilities. The Davie campus hosts the innovative Teaching and Leadership Center and is the base of operations for FAU’s Everglades research and restoration efforts in partnership with the U.S. Geological Survey.
The Dania Beach campus is also known as SeaTech, is the center of research and education for programs in ocean engineering. The Fort Lauderdale campus is home to a mix of professional and design-oriented programs, including architecture, business, computer animation, graphic design, public administration, and urban planning. The Fort Pierce campus is dedicated to research and learning about ocean science and technology. The campus site in Jupiter offers degree programs in disciplines that include education, criminal justice, social work, psychology, and the arts and humanities.
The FAU libraries possess a comprehensive collection of books, journals, encyclopedias, rare manuscripts, dictionaries, analysis guides, and various digital resources related to different courses of study. The university provides an on-campus housing facility to more than 4,000 students. There are about nine residence halls, dormitories, and apartment-style residences across all the campuses. FAU features a multitude of dining locations on the campus that serve a variety of fresh, hygienic and delicious meals and refreshments. The campus features a bookstore, movie theatre complex, dental clinic, medical center, art galleries, computer labs, convenience stores, ATMs, and various recreational facilities. Photocopying and printing, vending and mailing services are also rendered on the campus.
FAU has 10 colleges that offer over 170 programs in major areas of study. The university awards degree programs in diverse disciplines of humanities, science, business, medicine, education, engineering, public administration, architecture, nursing, computer science, and social work. It has partnerships with significant research institutions and organizations. It has 21 intercollegiate teams that represent FAU at various sporting events and competitions under the name, Owls. The university has an ethnically diverse student population from all 50 states and over 180 countries. At present, there are over 30,000 students. The student-faculty ratio at FAU is 24:1.
