Founded in the year 1944, the Fashion Institute of Technology is a well-recognized public university. It serves as a part of the State University of New York. This college is mainly known for its education in the disciplines such as fashion, art, business, design and communications. Mortimer C. Ritter and Max Meyer were the founders of the Educational Foundation for the Apparel Industries. After the approval of New York State Boards of Regents, it was reoriented under the present name. In the year 1959, it moved into Seventh Avenue, the heart of garment district. By the year 1979, this institution of quality education was approved to offer various other undergraduate and graduate courses by the Education Law of New York State. Of-late, there are over 10,000 students in this college. The College Consensus ranked FIT at 19th position for its online courses in the year 2019.

The campus of FIT spreads throughout an entire block in New York City. It has 9 campuses, each named after individuals who made notable contributions to the growth of the college. The campus has amenities such as radio labs, TV rooms, galleries and studios. The John E. Reeves Great Hall offers a platform for various guest lectures, fashion shows and exhibition to happen. The college also has its bookstore called the Barnes and Noble College Bookstore. Additionally, it offers two theatres, namely the Katie Murphy Amphitheatre and the Haft Auditorium. Located in Big Apple, students open themselves to a plethora of engaging activities, including cafes, street art and fashion. Fashion Institute of Technology offers convenient on-campus accommodations to the students with dining facilities.

FIT offers many grants and funding options to help students with their financials. One of these grants is the Diversity Grant, which supports developing educational projects. Many other grants that are available for the students are Diversity Council Events Grants, Sustainability Grant, Innovations Grant and Connecting Our Community Grant. Other funding sources are The Foundation Center, New York Foundation of Arts, U.S. Department of Energy and National Science Foundation. This college has been home to many notable alumni contributed significantly to the fields of fashion and art. Some of the famous names are – Karen Allen who is an acclaimed actress, Reema Acra who is a fashion designer known for her bridal dresses, Jhane Barnes who is a successful fashion designer, Carolina Bucci who is a famous jewellery designer, Helen Castillo who was a member of the show Project Runaway, Timothy D Bellavia who is a renowned author, Carolina Herrera who is President of Carolina Herrera New York, Carolina Hirsh who is the owner of Carolina’s Comedy Club and Calvin Klein who is the CEO of the leading attire brand Calvin Klein Inc.
