The college had almost 350-450 students in the pre-World War period. The college rebranded itself as Calvin University on 10th July 2019, which is the birthday of John Calvin. The most popular subjects of the university are Nursing, Engineering, and Business. The university is also a part of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities as the establishment in the Reformed custom of Christianity. The core curriculum is divided into three parts that are the Capstone, gateway and Competencies and Studies.
The students take the Developing a Christian Mind (DCM) course with the program of their choice. This is a course which through the eyes of various academic fields will introduce the idea of a Christian worldview and an engagement with a culture that is faith-based. The most popular core competencies include rhetoric, information technology, and world language, in which students have to take up aside their main course of study. There are many off-campus programs for the college and it ranks second among the baccalaureate colleges for the students studying abroad every year. The semester programs are offered at places from China to Washington, D.C.
There are many academic buildings on the campus like the Hiemenga Hall that were named after John Hiemenga built-in 1961. There is also the Covenant Fine Arts Center and the DeVos Communication Center. List of notable alumni includes Dave Agema, 1971 (Republican National Committeeman), Jon Vander Ark (president of Republic Services), William Brashler (author of The Bingo LongTravelling All-Stars and Motor Kings) and Meindert DeJong who was a Dutch-born American writer of books for children winning the Hans Christian Andersen Award among other famous people.
