University of Alberta’s Faculty of Law provides 1 year postgraduate program in LLM which provides students with an opportunity to study a particular area of law in much greater depth than is possible in the LLB program.

There are two programs available to students admitted to the LLM program: the 1) thesis-based LLM or the 2) course-based LLM.

  • Three reference forms and letters of recommendation
  • Two-to-five page description of the proposed research project, outlining the relevant legal issues, preliminary arguments, and the proposed research methodology. The proposal should include footnotes and a bibliography highlighting relevant academic sources.
  • Statement of Motivation which includes:
    • your reasons for wanting to undertake graduate studies in law in general and the LLM program in particular;

    • the reasons why you want to undertake graduate studies at our Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta;

    • your specific area(s) of academic interest;

    • your future career plans; and

    • any other information that the Graduate Studies Committee might find relevant.

  • Applicants are not required to submit English proficiency scores if they have completed their degrees at certain universities.
