London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is a constituent institution of the prestigious University of London. It was founded in 1899 as London School of Tropical Medicine. It started operating as a part of the branch hospital of Seaman’s Hospital Society in the London Docklands. The classes began with just 11 students. The school obtained its Royal Charter and the present name in 1924. Currently, it holds the accreditation of the Agency for Accreditation of Public Health Education in the European Region (APHEA). The school is home to 14 research centres and comprises three faculties – the faculties of Epidemiology & Population Health, Public Health & Policy and Infectious & Tropical Diseases.
Situated on Keppel Street in Bloomsbury, London, the LSHTM campus offers a plethora of academic, administrative and recreational facilities to the students. Its world-class infrastructure includes spacious classrooms, a huge library, study areas, workrooms, laboratories and other academic spaces. The campus also offers a myriad of comfortable accommodation options for international as well as local students. Besides this, it also provides a number of career services and recreational facilities for the interested students. It is home to many clubs and organisations formed by students with various interests and hobbies.
LSHTM offers numerous masters, doctoral, professional development, short-term and distance learning programmes in a variety of areas of health and hygiene. It has over 1,200 full-time doctoral and master’s students, 3,000 students enrolled in distance learning programmes and around 1,000 every year on continuous professional development and short courses. The college also offers many free online courses to over 70,000 participants worldwide. It is home to over 3,300 qualified and distinguished staff members. The college maintains several strategic collaborations with institutions in the UK and abroad. It holds the memberships of the prestigious networks and organisations like the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centres and the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH).
LSHTM has more than 30,000 alumni in over 180 countries across the globe. These alumni include some very successful and notable people. Sean Leung serves as the Senior Charities Manager for The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Susie Kitchens is the UK’s Deputy High Commissioner and the permanent representative to UN-Habitat and UNEP. Grace Hatton works as a clinical entrepreneur for NHS England. Victor Ugo founded the Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI). Dr Ibrahim Audu Salisu is an eminent public health physician, currently serving as the Sub-national Health Sector Coordinator and Public Health Officer at World Health Organization (WHO) Nigeria. Jillian Kowalchuk is the CEO and Founder of Safe & the City Ltd. Carlos Chaccour works as the Chief Scientific Officer for the BOHEMIA project. The college has many other distinguished alumni.
