Samuel Merritt University is a non-profit private institution with a focus on Health Sciences. The university was established in 1909. It was initially named as Samuel Merritt College and was formed as a Hospital School of Nursing. In 1981, the Intercollegiate Nursing Program in coalition with Saint Mary’s was founded. In 1990, the university founded the entry-level Master of Physical Therapy. In 1992, the university founded the Master of Occupational Therapy. In 1999, the Master Physician Assistant program was initiated. In 2002, the California School of Podiatric Medicine was founded.
Situated in Oakland, California, the university works to prepare professional nurses, physical therapists, physician assistants and occupational therapists. The university provides a Master of Science in nursing in three advanced nursing disciplines, namely Nurse Anesthesia (CRNA), Case Management and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). The University School of Nursing provides two bachelor’s degree programs. Notably, courses in Nursing Practice, Podiatric Medicine, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy are also provided at the doctorate level whereas the Physician Assistant Program is provided at the master’s level.
