Bucknell University

Founded in 1846, Bucknell University is a private institution situated in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania that offers education in liberal arts. Established as the University at Lewisburg, the establishment faced financial problems in 1851. A donation of 50,000 dollars was given by William Bucknell who was the part of the board of trustees. In 1886, the university’s name was changed to Bucknell University to honor William Bucknell and recognize his support.

The university occupies a land of 450-acre and houses more than 100 buildings. It offers programs in fields like arts, sciences, humanities, engineering, social sciences, management, education, and music. Apart from this, it provides pre-professional advising to prepare students’ law and medicine studies. The university has colleges including Freeman College of Management, College of Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences.

The university provides 63 academic majors and has three traditional liberal arts divisions and 31 departments. There are more than 360 staff members who provide quality teaching facilities to more than 3,500 undergraduate and 60 graduate students. The university is home to students coming from 50 states and 66 different countries. With a student-faculty ratio of 9:1, the university follows a core college curriculum. As the enrollment data of 2018 for the Class of 2022, a total of more than 10,000 applications are received out of which 3,352 are accepted and over 900 are still enrolling.

The university comes with around 200 student organizations. The university’s athletic team participates in NCAA Division I athletics and is a part of the Patriot League. There are 27 varsity sports teams out of which 14 are women and 13 are men teams. The men’s basketball team is known to be the 1st Patriot League team to win an NCAA tournament game. Apart from this, the university has a student newspaper called The Bucknellian which is published once a week. Also, it has a radio station namely WVBU-FM.

Bucknell University has more than 54,000 living alumni network. The alumni are working in and around the world contributing to different sectors. Some of the well-known alumni include Philip Roth (novelist), Ralph Waite (actor), Edward Herrmann (actor), Leslie Moonves (CBS Television CEO), Jane T. Elfers (CEO of Children’s Place and Lord & Taylor), Rob Andrews (longtime New Jersey congressman) and Peter Balakian (2016 Pulitzer Prize winner for Poetry). Other notable alumni include Christy Mathewson (National Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher) and Tim Keller (Author of New York Times Best Seller)
