Established in 1906, Abilene Christian University is a private university, which was earlier known as the Childers Classical Institute. The university is associated with the Council for Christian Universities & Colleges and the National Association of Independent Universities & Colleges. The university’s student-produced newspaper The Optimist began in 1912, and in 1916, it started publishing its yearbook The Prickly Pear. Since its development, the university has been managed by the Board of Trustees. In 1951, the university received its first accreditation. The engineering program at the university has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology. The university received university status in 1976. The university is known to host a live broadcast of NPR’s long-running A Prairie Home Companion radio show. Over the years, the university grew at a rapid growth rate with an increasing number of students.
The campus of the institute is extended over an area of 308 acres. It comprises a nursing department, an auditorium, a Church, three halls, an event hall, and a library that consists of thousands of journals, books, magazines and research documents. The students are allowed to access the online resources available at the library. All the competitions, fests, events, debates, quizzes and seminars organised by the university are held within the campus. The students experience a calm learning environment. The students are taught by experienced faculty members. Many industry professionals visit the university for interactive sessions, guest lectures, and practical workshops. The students also get an opportunity for internships under professionals at notable organizations. In addition, the university offers financial support to students who belong to a low financial background. They are offered assistance as per their academic performance in the semester examinations. The sports team of the university is known as ACU Wildcats. The university has won several sports competitions.
