Humboldt State University was initially known as the Humboldt State Normal College, Humboldt State College and California State University. Its motto in English translates to ‘Light Truth’. There are 3 colleges, namely the College of Natural Resources and Sciences, College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences and College of Professional Studies. The academic structure includes 69 minors and 48 undergraduate majors. The largest majors are in Art and Biology. Other than the California State Polytechnic University, this is the only one to provide a major in Botany. Situated in Arcata, Humboldt State University has various centres and institutes. The California Centre for Rural Policy focuses on policy development, building community and improving the health of rural people and their surroundings.

The Humboldt Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research works to improve the social, economic, environmental and physical health of various communities via the scientific study of marijuana. The Humboldt Science and Mathematics Centre helps in enhancing mathematics and science education. The Institute for Cartographic Design is affiliated to the Department of Geography and the Kosmos Lab. The Institute for Entrepreneurship Education is about the interdisciplinary study with special attention to the ethic of social responsibility and social entrepreneurship. The Institute of Health and Human Performance supports training for students and faculty and research in the fields of disease prevention, human performance, health, nutrition and physical activity. The Institute for Spatial Analysis is devoted to spatial analysis across multiple disciplines and tackling real-world issues. The Schatz Energy Research Centre helps in developing and using clean energy technology. Its specialisations are in energy efficiency, hydrogen energy systems, fuel cell efficiency and renewable energy.
