Generally referred to as City Tech, New York City College of Technology is a highly-ranked public institution of higher education in the City of New York, United States. Originally established as New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in the year 1946, the college started operating with a total of 246 students. It was renamed the New York City Community College in 1953 and was the first such institution in the city. City Tech underwent another name change in 1961 to become the Voorhees Technical Institute. In 1963, it became a constituent of the City University of New York (CUNY) to evolve into New York City Community College. It obtained the senior college status under the name New York City Technical College in 1980. The college took up its current name in the year 2002.
City Tech has a beautiful campus located in Downtown Brooklyn, featuring nine buildings, namely General Building, Academic Complex, Voorhees Hall, Pearl Building, Namm Hall, Howard Building, Environmental Center, Midway Building and Library Building. Opened in 2018, the Academic Complex houses the department healthcare and science and facilities, including an eye-care and health center, a 1000-seat auditorium, a gymnasium, and several faculty offices. The institution provides a wide range of academic support facilities to the students such as computer services, tutoring assistance, and free workshops. The institution ensures the health and well-being of its students through regular health assessments and on-time medical services. For this purpose, the site features a dental hygiene clinic, vision care clinic, counseling services center and a medical center. Other on-campus facilities include a bookstore, cafeteria, printing and scanning services, computer labs and technology enhancement centers with access to free internet.
The college comprises three academic schools that offer 31 undergraduate and 30 associate degrees as well as a range of professional courses and certificates. Students can choose to pursue their degrees in different disciplines of business, arts, humanities, engineering, hospitality and management, healthcare, design, media, information technology, public service, law, natural sciences, education and English. City Tech is a vast community of cultures and ethnicities represented by students and faculty from over 120 countries who speak about 80 different languages. As per the data of Fall 2019, the total student enrolment at the college is 17,036 across all the programs, out of which 61% are pursuing degrees full-time and 39% part-time learners. It has 390 full-time and 1,100 part-time faculty members, each one of whom is highly-qualified, knowledgeable and experienced.
City Tech has a global alumni network of over 106,000 graduates, which includes some popular names like Hiroaki Aoki (Olympics Wrestler and Founder of Benihana Inc.), Ray Sharkey (TV and Film Actor), Samuel E Vázquez (Visual Artist), Julian Niccolini (Restaurateur), Michael Lomonaco (Restaurateur, Chef and TV Personality), Robert Holden (Professor and Graphic Designer), Salvatore Cassano (New York City Fire Commissioner), Zev Brenner (Radio Host) and Charles Barron (Politician and Activist).
