Valparaiso University was founded as Valparaiso Male and Female College by Methodists in 1859. It was one of the country’s first co-educational institutions. The college was shut down in 1871 due to the losses suffered during the civil war. Henry Baker Brown reopened it as Northern Indiana Normal School in 1873. In 1900, the school was renamed as Valparaiso College and was given its existing in 1905. Currently, the university holds the accreditation of the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and has been approved by various other agencies and organizations.
Situated in Valparaiso, Indiana, the university campus is sprawled across 350 acres and consists of over 60 residential and academic buildings. Harre Student Union covers an area of 202,000 square feet and includes a computer lab, career center, bookstore and two dining options at the Campus Cafe and Founders Table. The Chapel of the Resurrection is located on the campus’ highest point and is counted amongst Northwest Indiana’s landmarks. The Center for the Arts features a 275-seat theatre, the Brauer Museum of Art and a 170-seat recital hall. The campus also has Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources that offers 180 public computers and stores 6,00,000 volumes.
The residential facilities include seven fraternity houses and nine apartment buildings and residence halls. The campus also provides students with athletic facilities like four hi-tech gyms, racquetball courts, an indoor pool and track and a fitness center that offers weights and cardio machines. Other services include uninterrupted internet access, media-equipped labs and classrooms, advanced equipment, digital audio-video labs, a weather forecasting studio and tele-production studios.
Valparaiso University’s five undergraduate colleges offer over 70 majors while it’s Graduate School offers over 40 programs in various fields of education including arts, sciences, engineering, business, nursing, health professions, and languages. It houses more than 3,200 undergraduate students and over 580 graduate and law students. The university’s student population consists of many international students representing many U.S. states and 38 countries across the world. It has 310 distinguished faculty members and features a student-faculty ratio of 11:1. The institution is home to over 100 co-curricular organizations. Also, it offers the opportunity to participate in more than 50 Study Abroad programs in Asia, Europe, Australia, Central America, Africa, and South America.
More than 60,000 members are a part of Valparaiso University’s extensive alumni network. Many notable and successful people have graduated from the university. R. J. Q. Adams is an acclaimed American historian. Adam Amin is a popular radio and television sportscaster currently working with ESPN. Roy E. Ayers served as Montana’s 11th governor. Fredrick Barton is a well-known novelist. Beulah Bondi was a famous actress who appeared in ‘Vivacious Lady’, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ and ‘The Waltons’. Alys McKey Bryant was an aviation pioneer who trained pilots during WWI. There are several other names in the university’s distinguished alumni list.
