Western Illinois University, situated in Macomb, Illinois is a public university. The university was established in 1899 as a Western Illinois State Normal School. The school concentrates on teacher training for its comparatively small body of students. As the normal school expanded, it became Western Illinois State Teachers College. The university is spread across a vast area of 1050 acres. The university comprises 5 academic colleges named Centennial Honors College, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Technology, the College of Education and Human Services, and the College of Fine Arts and Communication
The university offers over 100 innovative undergraduates and graduates degree programs, integrated programs, pre-professional programs, and certificate programs. The university’s honor’s students complete a series of projects and courses not available to the average students studying in the university and they are also eligible for several exclusive foundation scholarships. The students, who graduated from the honors program of the Centennial Honors College have received applications to graduate schools and decent job placements.
As per the records of fall 2019, Around 7,600 students enrolled at different degree programs. The university provides a low student-to-faculty ratio 13:1 and an average class size of 17 students. With 547 professors teaching 95 percent of all undergraduate and graduate courses, Western students benefit from a high degree of interaction and interest from their professors. The University Libraries’ facilities hold more than 1 million cataloged volumes of monographs and periodicals and offer online access to the full texts of 56,000 academic journals and other publications
The university competes and participates in the NCAA Division I Summit League. The university’s football team competes in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The university was a member of the Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference from 1914-1970.
